New construction of research center sitem-insel

The sitem-insel research center offers modern infrastructure for applied medical research - a MedTech cluster with more than ten research-specific user extensions. It includes biosafety laboratories (BSL 3), various wet laboratories, radiology laboratories and hybrid operating theaters.
Every project has its own specific characteristics that need to be recognized in good time. In my view, the most important success factors are expertise in the interrelationships between hygiene and ventilation design, measurement and control technology and monitoring. The early involvement of operations, i.e. the people responsible for maintaining the technology, is also often underestimated.

challenges

How can we guarantee functional flexibility for research and still meet the design requirements?

Due to its research character, the new building should offer as many options as possible for later conversion and expansion. This increases the complexity of the planning. During the ongoing project, the team had to react flexibly to changing framework conditions, for example by revising standards and regulations or adapting the use of the building. Fire protection was also affected. The building's architecture focuses on a transparent and light-flooded design. Under these conditions, it was a particular challenge to integrate the technical requirements into the overall concept in the best possible way.

SOLUTIONS

A diverse, specialized team modeled extensive scenarios with the help of BIM.

The experience of the entire team is crucial to the success of the project. Both in the area of laboratory ventilation and in the area of the thermal energy balance (heating/cooling) of the sophisticated glass façade construction, we relied on a proven team that had already successfully solved similar tasks. With the help of BIM, we were able to model the various options for the subsequent conversion and extension. We were nominated for the Swiss BuildIng Award 2021 in the Best-in-Class Building Technology category for the project.

Our engineers have decades of experience in the realization of state-of-the-art critical infrastructures.

As general planners, we bear overall responsibility for complex construction projects - from technical planning to execution. We coordinate all trades and ensure quality, deadlines and costs.

We advise on all aspects of energy and building technology. Sometimes as technical experts, sometimes as project managers for major investments.
