New Construction of the sitem-insel Research Centre
Bern
The sitem-insel research centre offers modern infrastructure for applied medical research - a medtech cluster with more than ten research-specific user extensions. It comprises biosafety labs (BSL 3), various wet labs, radiology labs and hybrid operating theatres.
"Every project has its own specific characteristics that need to be recognised in good time. I see the most important success factors as competence in the contexts of hygiene and
ventilation concept with the measuring and control technology and
monitoring. The early involvement of the establishment, i.e. the
persons responsible for the maintenance of the technology, is often
understated."

How can we guarantee functional flexibility in research and still meet the design requirements?
Challenges
Due to the research character of the new building, it should include as many
options for later conversion and expansion as possible. This added to the
complexity during the planning stage. In the course of the ongoing project, it was necessary for
the team to react flexibly to changing conditions, for example by revising standards and regulations or making adjustments to the intended use of the building. Fire protection was also affected. In the architecture of the building, the transparent and light-flooded design was in the foreground. Under these general conditions, it was a special challenge to optimally integrate the technical requirements into the overall concept.
A diverse and specialised team modelled extensive scenarios with the help of BIM.
Solutions
The experience of the
entire team is crucial for the success of the project
. Both in the area of laboratory ventilation and in the area of
of the thermal energy balance (heating/cooling) of the
glass façade construction, we relied on a tried and tested team which had already successfully solved comparable tasks. With the help of BIM, we were able to model the different options for the subsequent conversion and expansion. We were nominated for the project by the Swiss BuildIng Award 2021 in the Best-in-Class Building Technology category.
