IoT in the Children's Hospital

Zurich

To continuously improve the operation of the Zurich children's hospital, devices and people should be recorded in real time. The challenge here is that the building project has already been completed, so the complete IoT planning has to be integrated into the existing architecture.

How can comprehensive IoT planning be seamlessly integrated into an existing construction project?

Challenges
Already in the early planning phases of the children's hospital, new possibilities were examined through the use of IoT solutions in preliminary studies. However, the decision to install a comprehensive localisation solution and additional sensors for counting people and presence detection was only made after the construction project phase. Accordingly, it was subsequently difficult to supplement the existing works in such a way that our solutions could be implemented. Many of our sensors now have to be mounted visibly. This required intensive coordination with the architects.

With a smart building application, data can be analysed in real time and used for optimisation.

Solutions
An area-wide localisation solution is being installed based on the UWB (ultra-wide band). This allows devices and people to be located with centimetre precision in real time. To meet the high demands, specially designed housings were made for some of the sensors. All data is stored in a central smart building application, enriched and visualised. In this way, every user receives the insights that are relevant to them. An App ensures navigation and access to location data for mobile devices. This technology can additionally be used for easy navigation in the building, so that visitors and patients can find their destination faster.
